Monica Lake is a Long Beach–based photographer exploring the beauty, complexity, and expansiveness of Black life. Her work is rooted in the belief that Blackness deserves to be documented in its entirety—not just in moments deemed palatable, but in all of its color, texture, brilliance, and joy.

She is drawn to what makes us unmistakably ourselves: the gold grills, the laughter that fills a room, the fresh haircut, the Sunday suit, the acrylic nails, the tenderness between loved ones, the confidence, the style, the traditions, and the rituals that shape our lives. Every detail carries meaning.

Through portraiture, Lake creates photographs that honor Black people as they are: layered, self-defined, and fully seen. Her images reject the idea that beauty requires restraint. Instead, they celebrate a people whose power lives just as much in boldness as it does in vulnerability.

Her practice is an act of preservation, creating images that affirm our stories, our culture, and the many ways we choose to show up in the world.
